Free Cycle is amazing!  One of my goals this year was to build a clothes closet.  I searched every where for donations, and then my neighbor told me about Free Cycle.  One month later, I have more clothes than I know what to do with.  I was also able to assist a family in need with furniture.  I have new play therapy toys for my office, arts and craft supplies for groups, and games for guidance and counseling.  The best part is: IT WAS ALL FREE!

Go to their site.  Find a group near you.  Register, and then set your groups on email.  Each day I get tons of email of all the free things waiting for me.  I respond to the items I want, and pick them up on their porch later.  It's that simple.

SCHOOL COUNSELING: WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS FOR THE SCHOOL STAFF?

The elementary school counselor is an integral part of the total elementary school program. The counselor observes children; consults with teachers, psychologists, and social workers.  The counselor gathers and provides resources, conducts classroom guidance lessons, collaborates on classroom intervention, conducts joint parent conferences, holds small group and individual counseling sessions, and serves on committees that plan for the individual needs of specific children.  The counselor helps students become motivated learners and encourages them to discuss concerns with their parents and teachers. When students work through their social and emotional issues, with the help of their parents, teachers, and the counselor, they are able to devote attention and energy to the intellectual tasks at school.

The elementary school counselor helps teachers by:

  • Consulting with them concerning children
  • Coordinating intervention efforts for an individual, small group, or an entire class
  • Planning small group and classroom activities to meet specific needs of students
  • Gathering and sharing resources
  • Observing children in the classroom or on the playground
  • Conferencing with parents
  • Conducting small group or individual counseling
  • Coordinating staff efforts to work with individual students
  • Promoting a positive school climate
  • Explaining the academic program
  • Assisting with classroom management strategies
  • The elementary school counselor is a vital resource for the school staff.  He or she coordinates and helps implement the staff's efforts to meet the needs of students individually, in small groups, and in the classroom. (Reference- FCPS Online)
